Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3)

Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) is an object storage service that offers industry-leading scalability, data availability, security, and performance. This means customers of all sizes and industries can use it to store and protect any amount of data for a range of use cases, such as websites, mobile applications, backup and restore, archive, enterprise applications, IoT devices, and big data analytics.
Amazon S3 provides easy-to-use management features so you can organize your data and configure finely-tuned access controls to meet your specific business, organizational, and compliance requirements. Amazon S3 is designed for 99.999999999% (11 9's) of durability, and stores data for millions of applications for companies all around the world.

Amazon S3 Features

Amazon S3 provides many tools to organize and control support for specific use cases. With it, you can achieve significant cost savings, security, and regulatory compliance. In the service, data is stored as objects in resources, which are called baskets, while the size of one object can be up to 5 TB. Thanks to the S3 repository, you can add metadata tags to objects, move and save data in S3 repository classes, configure and apply data access controls, protect data from unauthorized use, apply big data analytics, and track data at the object and recycle levels. At the same time, access to objects can be obtained through S3 access points or through the container host name directly.

  • Storage management

Data classification, reporting, and customization of other features of S3 are done using the names of baskets, prefixes, object tags, and the S3 Inventory service.
These tasks are greatly simplified thanks to the S3 Batch Operations service, and this does not depend on the number of objects. S3 Batch Operations allow you to manage data at any scale. Using S3 Batch Operations makes copying objects between baskets possible, as well as replacing object tag sets, making changes to access controls, and restoring archived objects from Amazon S3 Glacier. This can be accomplished with a single request to the S3 API or with just a few clicks in the Amazon S3 Management Console. S3 Batch Operations also allows the application of the AWS Lambda feature to execute custom business logic to different objects. An example of this is data processing or image transcoding.

  • Storage monitoring

As well as other AWS services S3 features can be used to control the use of S3 resources. Apply tags to S3 baskets by distributing expenses within several divisions of your business. After that, reports will be generated on the distribution of costs of use and expenses. Reports will be generated by cart tags. In addition, you can use Amazon CloudWatch to track the performance of AWS resources and use it to set up payment alerts that are sent if the costs intended for users differ from the limit that they originally designated. Another service from AWS - CloudTrail helps you track activity at the facility and basket levels by providing relevant reports.

  • Storage classes

Amazon S3 can store data in various classes of S3 storage: S3 Standard, S3 Intelligent Tiering, S3 Standard Infrequent Access (S3 Standard IA), S3 One Zone Infrequent Access (S3 One Zone IA), Amazon S3 Glacier (S3 Glacier) and Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive (S3 Glacier Deep Archive).
Each S3 storage class provides a certain level of data access, and the price corresponds to it. This means that, for example, important production data can be stored in S3 Standard if you need frequent access. Infrequently used data - in S3 Standard-IA or S3 One Zone-IA in order to reduce costs and archive data with minimum expenses in the archive storage classes - S3 Glacier and S3 Glacier Deep Archive.

  • Security

By storing data on Amazon S3, you can protect it from unauthorized access, which is achieved through encryption capabilities and access control tools. S3 is the only service for storing objects that makes it possible to block public access to all objects in the basket or at the account level thanks to the S3 Block Public Access function. S3 operates in accordance with regulatory compliance standards - such as PCI DSS, HIPAA / HITECH, FedRAMP, the EU Data Protection Directive and FISMA. In addition, AWS has the ability to audit to track requests for access to your resources stored on S3.

  • Data transfer

Thanks to S3, you can be sure of the reliable management and transfer of your data, and you can also track the costs, replication and data protection associated with it. The S3 Access Points component will greatly simplify data access control with specific permissions for applications that use shared datasets. The service also has the ability to replicate data, which allows you to manage it within the region or in other regions. Using the S3 batch operation service, you can manage large-scale changes in billions of objects.

- AMAZON S3 USE EXAMPLES

Amazon S3 Access Points will simplify access for applications that use shared datasets in S3 regardless of their size. You can easily create hundreds of access points for each basket and provide access to shared sets of data in a new way.

- Backup and restore

You can create reliable, secure, and scalable solutions that you can back up and restore. AWS services such as S3 Glacier, Amazon EFS, and Amazon EBS can also help in this, helping to expand or completely replace the local available features.

- Disaster recovery (DR)

You can protect the critically important data, applications, and information systems running in the AWS cloud or at your sites without paying for the physical duplication of infrastructure.

- Archive

Forget about the physical infrastructure and archive data with S3 Glacier and S3 Glacier Deep Archive.

- Data lakes and big data analytics

Accelerate innovation by creating a data lake in Amazon S3 and get valuable insights. You will be able to achieve this using queries without data extraction, analytics and machine learning tools.

- Hybrid cloud storage

Connect local applications to AWS Storage effortlessly, locally caching low latency access data.

- Cloud-native application data

Develop efficient and fast Internet applications using AWS and Amazon S3 services for storing production data.
